Bartolomé de Las Casas was the first and amongst the fiercest critics of Spanish colonialism in the New World. An early traveler to the Americas, he sailed on one of Columbus's voyages. Las Casas was so horrified by the wholesale massacre he witnessed that he dedicated his life to protecting the Indian communities. He wrote A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies in 1542. It is a shocking account of mass slaughter, torture and slavery, which shows how the evangelizing vision of Columbus descended, under later conquistadors, into genocide. Dedicated to Philip II so as to alert the Castilian Crown to the atrocities, Las Casas demanded that the Indians be accorded the basic rights of humankind. It is a passionate work of documentary vividness which outraged Europe and contributed to the idea of the Spanish 'Black Legend', that would last for centuries.
