History of Highland Dress
John Telfer Dunbar, Annette KokThe book traces descriptions and depictions of Highland dress from evidence of origins through to the 20th century, and also discusses tartans in some detail, including the beginnings of clan tartans. Of especial value are the many quotations from original manuscript descriptions, and illustrations of period depictions (many in color). Although the interpretation of this material is generally sound, the inclusion of the original sourcing allows one to judge for oneself the value of Dunbar's interpretations.
This book has some descriptions and depictions not included in McClintock's 1943 & 1950 editions of 'Old Irish and Highland Dress'. For an equally authoritative historical volume on tartans in particular, see James D. Scarlett's 'Tartan: The Highland Textile'.
NOTE: There's a 1979 reprint (Oliver & Boyd), but it's actually inferior; while it has exactly the same text, various colour plates in this 1962 original were rendered in black-and-white instead, to cut the cost. This particular scan is not ideal, but is vastly better than a badly over-compressed one found on some other sites.
